HOW TO AVOID DISTRACTIONS

(via Design for Mankind)

Miranda July does it again with this video on dealing with distractions.

At first glance, sheโ€™s illustrating what we all struggle with: distraction. Beeps and pings, wandering eyes and lingering thoughts until โ€“ suddenly โ€“ the day has grown dark and our stomachs are growling, with little actual work accomplished. (Guilty.)

But I think this video reveals more. I think itโ€™s a call to action, begging the question: What is your hostage? And what puts it in danger?

Whether your hostage is kindness or innocence, purpose or creativity, distraction binds each. And if weโ€™re wise โ€“ like Miranda July โ€“ weโ€™d all do well to put a baking sheet of grape juice atop it.

More Miranda July.

At least they’ll be safe there. I played this vid for my partner, & she promised that, if she needed the kind of motivation that puts something dear at risk, I would be on the table, & a dozen knives would be suspended above me ๐Ÿ˜‰
