BATMAN COMIC JAM

To celebrate the very first Batman Day (and the character’s 75th anniversary) yesterday, I hosted a special comics jam at Dragons Keep in Provo, Utah. 40 comics-lovers showed up to make their own Dark Knight pass-along comics and the results were amazing.

Rules of the jam:
1) Cut out a panel from an existing Batman comic book (panel must have Batman in it somewhere).
2) Paste the panel to the top of your paper and draw your own second panel in sequence. (You are not recreating the panel you pasted, but drawing what happens next.)
3) Pass your page to someone else to draw the third panel, then to someone else for the fourth, and so on, until the comic is finished.

Where was this?!?! I go to the Toronto Comic Jam a llllllll the time and wish I could have gone to this. What comic store again? Do they have a website? Will they post the finished pages somewhere? PLease let me know. THANKS!

  Hey, David! Good for you, keeping the Toronto scene alive. This was actually our second event, so we’re just getting started (more to come next month!). If you ever make your way to Utah (and you really should), you’ll want to stop by the Provo Dragons Keep. They do comics and games right and they really made a party out of our jam.
  
  I have a bunch of the comics with me that I’m hoping to scan in the next couple of days. I’ll put up another post when they’re ready.
  
  Do you have any of your own jams to share? I’m making up my own methods, so I’d be curious to see how it’s done in Toronto.

    The Toronto Comic Jam has been going for about 17 years now and it was inspired by the Montreal Comic Jam that’s even older. Not sure what tips I can provide. We have it at a bar once a month and attract a mostly Indie Crowd. Having it at a Comic Shop sounds fun, especially the pizza party part. I guess the best advice is to keep it regular and consistent so people can find you. What did you want to know?

    Is it the same kind of jam each time, or do you mix it up with different challenges each time?
    
    For example: for the first jam I hosted, I had everyone draw the very last panel first–they were drawing the ending to a comic that hadn’t yet been created. They’d pass it to the next person, who would draw what happens before that panel, and so on, until the first panel was finally completed, telling a complete story, from beginning to end.
    
    This Batman jam was completely different, and next month’s will be a new challenge.
    
    What kind of rules do you have for your jams?
